Mount it inside or outside to keep the heim joints as centered as possible since the system is in single shear.

Recently installed a fancy aftermarket linkage on my '19 SGS. Front is on the inside as was the stock linkage.

However, JFYI, there was a problem with the adjuster nut on the linkage interfering with the front shifter assembly bar and causing the front shifter assembly to stick/jam and not return as normal. Found I had to install a washer between the shifter bar and the front Hiem Joint of the linkage to eleiminate the problem.

I had installed a similar aftermarket linkage on my '18 Heritage without any problems, but did notice the end joints on OEM linkage on the SGS is of a differeent configuration so there is no interference with the front shifter assembly.

Only a few things to consider: Configure for the LEAST angle side to side consistent with access to tighten the nuts and bolts involved AND provide interference free operation when assembled.

Here's mine on my 18 FLHXS. It's a straight line from front (inside) to back (outside).

And yes, the instructions appear to be incorrect.

Thanks yes that’s exactly how mine ended up
shifter seems to move freely no problem at all
the black tranny shifter rod cover from the kit didn’t work with my curved lever though

Mine wouldn't work either. I left a review on HD's website stating so. Another reviewer had the same issue.

Looking at the set-up I don't understand why this would even have to be asked let alone get 16 responses.

i had some difficulty, I took the HD aftermarket shifter (same style as pics) off my 2010, and put it on the 2018, and the rod ends were screwed in ALL THE WAY, and I had to unscrew the rod ends to get the front nut assembly to quit hitting the cylinder fins.

so adjusting the overall length of the rod ends should allow you to do it as Barney posted.

FWIW, this is a good time to adjust the pegs on the splines & get the pegs to lay almost flat.
I had floorboard extenders on my 2010, and when I put it back together, i put the pegs on the spline, then adjusted the rod ends to get the pegs almost flat, and I could shift up & down without taking my foot off the floorboard (the extenders allow the peg to go down further)

I’d like to see a pic of this if you have one available. I’m still getting accustomed to the heel-toe shifting system. Im starting to like it but seems like a bit more “thought” needed to perform. (Not sure if that makes much sense...lol)
