You probably already thought of this, but I don't think Harley's main concern was hooking up your phone. That was put there to upgrade the GPS and the radio system.
CarPlay doesn't work without being plugged in, so they had to at least think about it.
I took out the grey foam padding which exposes a small hole on each side of the compartment..,then just run the cable out the hole to your handlebar, you can put the foam padding back in once youve run the cable through the hole and then just close the door. This works perfectly with an iPhone lightning cable because its so small and will fit through the hole and IMO is a better alternative to cutting a notch in the door.
That is an amazing tip! Thank you so much. I am going to do this first thing in the morning.
I have a huge Pelican cover for it too, just butt the entire iPhone against the right side of the opening.
CarPlay requires a firmware update for my 2019 Road Glide (base FLTRX).
If you dont have a WHIM installed just have the dealer flash it for Whim and then CarPlay will work. Make sure you have the latest GTS software update first and make sure projection is turned on.

This will work. However, the problem is you cannot use voice activation with CarPlay without the WHIM.
I have a 2019 touring bike with the GTS audio system and a media compartment where my iPhone plugs in. The problem is, my iPhone does not fit in the media compartment and I prefer to mount it on my handlebars any way. Here lies the problem. When I have the phone mounted on my handlebars, I have a USB cable running from the connector in the media compartment to my iPhone; I need this for CarPlay to work. The USB cable prevents the media compartment door from closing easily and it takes many attempts, sometimes while I am riding, to close it and keep it closed.
In my opinion, this is a horrible design by H-D, and they should have thought of a way to accommodate a USB cable coming out of the media compartment. I am sure others have / had this same issue and came up with some clever solutions. Please share what you have done to address this problem. Pictures are welcome.
Thanks in advance.
#first world problems. I just run the cable on the ride side of the bottom of the "door" work fine.

It is a first world problem. However, that is exactly the purpose of this forum; to exchange great ideas and tips for issues exactly like this. Let's face it, any issue related to having a $20K+ bike, or a $40K+ bike in my case, is a first world problem. Without first world problems, this entire forum would not exist.
Also, your solution is not a great one. It is the same one I have been using for months. The problem is, it is sometimes difficult to get the door closed and even more of a pain to close it when it sometimes pops open going down the highway at 80 miles per hour.

Thanks! But I'd rather avoid hacking things and following the supported path.
WHIM is needed, as well as the latest flash, to conform with Apple's standards and requirements, and more importantly to get support.

I have been meaning to circle back to this thread. I am sure I am being dense about this but I cannot seem to find the 'small hole' on each side of the compartment you are referring to. When I do find it, are you running the USB cable behind the media compartment, through the back of the fairing, to the handlebar somehow? Does any part of the fairing have to come off to do this? I do not see a path to run the USB cable that allows for it to run from the back or the side of the compartment without having to eventually through the front, where the media compartment door is, to get to the handlebar. I have a 2019 CVO Street Glide, is something different in the design of the media compartment?
