If it's the same as a car, it works this way. When you step on the pedal, a digital and an analog signal is sent to the Engine computer, the computer then tells the throttle body how far to open. Electronic throttle body/module.
So I would think, if the bike is drive by wire, then when you twist the throttle it will send an electronic signal to the engine computer or throttle module to open so far.
bay13 offers what I would think is a accurate description of the electronic throttle control.
What baffles me is why some are fearful of this not-so-new method for controlling throttle position. Cables have issues of wear and breakage that diminish control with use and could possibly leave the throttle stuck shut or worsewide open. It's relatively easy to design an electronic circuit with fail-safesso shorts or control component failures do not create a hazardous condtition. Other than the actuator that drives the throttle butterfly there should be no mechanical parts to wear on this system.Note that cable control alsowill have wear associated with the movement of the throttle butterfly. Provided H-D didn't do something incredibly stupid (fear of litigation does add to corporate IQ) this system should be a much better means of throttle control.
The industry I work in has beenmaking a similar transition from mechanical to electronic/digitalcontrolsin the past decade or so. In general, electronic controls offer far better reliability andmore features - all from components that cost less than mechanical controls.
Most airliners these days are "fly by wire", and all fighter aircraft are. It isa proven technology, nothing to be afraid of. The stealth bomber couldn't fly without it, inherently unstable airplane.[&:]
the throttle is like a volume ****, depending on how far you turn it, it sends an appropriate signal to what they call a stepping motor on the throttle.
turn throttle a little the motor turns a little, alot then it turns more.
Just one more thing that a dealer will have the only tool for making adjustments too.
The new ECM with throttle by wire was a good way to put thunder max, Power commander and the rest of aftermarket companies from taking profits away from harley. They are all out of the tuning loop for 08, if you dont go with a Harley SERT you dont go at all except stock. At least for a very long time to come.
