Default Finding Leak

Was pooling up on left side of frame near stand as well as engine case near front of engine. It seems to be getting worse since wiping things down while looking for it.

I still can’t pin point it... Thought it was Primary no I fear it may be engine cases.

Is there anything else up front I should be looking at?

One very common leak point is the grommet where the stator wires exit the primary. It will coat the underside of the engine bact to the jiffy stand.

To point out obvious you need to see where on bike it is coming from, rather than where it is blowing. Granted, easier said than done. Left side has stator grommet. Base of jugs. Split in cases too.

Get a case of brake cleaner and wear safety glasses.

Use an inspection mirror and good flashlight and check shift shaft seal where it goes into the trans. case.

Yep. That's the most likely place. My '09 had the same problem. The fix is to get the grommet and the entry hole as clean and free of oil as possible then inject some ultra black into the hole and around the grommet. I did that to mine at 16K miles. I now have over 72K and no leak. There's a thread about this fix in the forum.

Just a random pic for example. Not necessarily an FL touring bike.

Welcome to the leaky stator grommet club! Think of it as a trophy...a badge of honor...an indication that you actually ride your bike. My 2010 Ultra leaks like a mf'er from here and has marked her place all over my garage floor and anywhere else we visit. I will probably give her the ol'e college try to seal her up with black RTV after a good cleanse with brake cleaner but that seems hit & miss at best. The real problem here is that I am a cheap bastard and refuse to replace a perfectly good stator just to acquire a new grommet (cannot purchase separate). Would you believe me if I told you "they all do that".....guess the grommet dries with age and shrinks or hardens/cracks. Yup! It's a Harley and true to form she marks her place and claims territory. I like to think of it as corrosion protection for the undercarriage between washings and I ride on!

Yeah I was looking at that little bastard and after some brake cleaner and a running her a little bit that seems to be it.

I’ll check the forums for the fix. Better than inner primary or engine case which I was leaning towards.

So the leak is primary oil not engine oil right?

You will need to replace the stator.

Outer primary, clutch, and comp need to come off. .

Had the same drip on my 07, I used a pick tool to lift up the lip on the grommet and cleaned with brake fluid, When you apply the silicon lift up the grommet lip and apply around it.. or you can replace the stator, up to you.

rk classic.
