Default Road King or Electra Glide Standard?

I'm thinking that I want to pay off my Sportster by next summer, and pick up a Big Twin. The thing is I can't decide whether to get a Road King, or an Electra Glide Standard. As far as I can see, they are exactly the same bike, except the FLHT has a fairing, with some extra instrumentation.

But the FLHT is actually a bit cheaper than the FLHR.

Does it actually matter in terms of anything important what he difference is between the two models? Are there advantages to one or the other that I'm simply not aware of?

If you want an instrumented fairing, then you should go with the electra/street/road glide. If you want a quick detachable windshield with the option of an aftermarket quick detachable fairing with stereo and speakers, then you should go with the road king.

Other than the instrumented fairing, you can always add the tour pack, fairing lowers, and additional chrome to your road king as accessories if the quick detachable windshield is important to you.

The fairing is a huge advantage over the road king. It will block alot of wind and rain. The only drawback with the FLHT Standard is the motor is not black with chrome.

Agree with boe. I never cared for the silver engine. Just doesn't look as sharp with crome accessories, IMO. Other than that, the standard is a great starting point, and for the price, if you can see past the motor, I would go for it. If you are considering a used bike, you might take a look at a police model. They are usually a lot less expensive, and also a great starting point.

PapaTravis is right, if you can live with the silver engine than theFLHT is a better value. I have a RK and I will be adding a fairing this year beforeI head out for BikeWeek.

I looked at the RK and decided on the EG Standard because of price and the fairing. I've added enough stuff in the past year that I'm only a black & chrome engine away from having an Ultra Classic. I love the way the bike rides. The ONLY thing I don't like is the silver engine. If you can get past that, the EG is the way to go.

Someone said thatthey ride a road king with a sportster attitude. Took the windshield off the RKC when I got home. Will think about putting it back on later.

Thanks, guys. It's kinda odd, though, that the EG Standard has the instrumented fairing, but it costs less than the RK. You'd think it would be the other way around.

Your paying for the flexibility of the RK.

I was in your place a few months ago.
Torn between an EG STD or RK.

Chose the RK because the look of the fairing was not growing on me like I thought it would. I can always get a fairing later if I wanted to.

I like being able to remove the windshield on my RK for around-town cruising.
I'd be stuck with the fairing for ALL rides if I'd gone with the EG STD
No regrets on my choice as yet.

I would say ride both and see what you like. The fairing makes a big difference. I rode my buddies EG and I didn't like it. The way the wind grabs the fairing and the view. By the view I mean looking out over the fairing is alot different then looking thru a windshield and being able to see thee front tire. One other thing I didn't like was the handle bars, his was a cop bike so I don't know if that was why or not but there is a big difference. The ride was the same.
