Default shifter leaver removal

hello the spline on my shifter leaver near the gear box is gone..has anyone removed the shifter shaft and leaver and how hard is it ? I see that there is a sirclip beside the leaver dose the primery have to come off to do this repair or can the shaft come out the right side?
thanks.

Please clarify year and model.
How do you know that spline is stripped.
Reasons:
#1) The actual lever is a softer metal than spline and most times a lever replacement is all that is required.
#2) The 5 speed bikes require removal of inner primary to access the lever.
The 6 speed bikes have an indent on back of inner primary that permits removal of lever without inner primary removal.
Remove bolt on lever and set bolt aside, slide lever, tilt and remove.
#3) The Betterlever is an option if you really have stripped shaft or maybe if you have a 5 speed and do not plan on changing a final drive belt.
