Fairly low mileage for that to happen, but things do. Good it's under warranty.

I bought a couple of Heim joints from McMaster-Carr.... pretty inexpensive...and I did buy a left hand thread and right hand thread. Got a piece of stainless rod and had the machine shop cut to length and thread each end and mill a small flat for a wrench. Changed all these and the shift feels much better. More of a positive and solid feel. The old ball joints were sloppy at best. You can do the same thing at home, I did not need our machine shop to do anything, but when there's another biker running a machine, and he tells you to bring stuff in and he'll take care of you....what are you supposed to do???
Regardless, I would change the old ball joints to the heim joints and be done with it. As far as your tranny..... can't help. But would be interested in what you find!

I think it's just a number they put on the gear indicator, like turning your amp up to 11.

...and the answer is...

A bent shift fork.

I asked how the heck this would happen and got the proverbial

My dealer claims they haven't seen this before. They will replace the entire guts of the transmission, and should have me ready to go again sometime next week. ("if all goes as planned")

Brute force by the operator is the normal cause of bent shifter forks. Slamming the lever on a floor shift car/truck. Stomping the toe shifter on a bike.

No problems with 5th gear? That’s the gear shifted by the other side of the fork, as I see it in the parts diagram. If it’s simply a bent fork, 5th should be problematic to disengage.

In any case, their replacement is a thorough fix.

The fifth gear was just fine...sounded fine, ran fine, shifted in and out of 5th, just like all the other gears. Except 6.
