I just bought a 2000 RK classic injected. I was thinking of putting on a tach. I am always accused of lugging my motors. Besides a new speedo/tach combo from a new model anyone have any thoughts? Thanks
I just installed the speedo/tach combination on my RKC. The tach is small and and if your watching any tach to shift, your not watching the road. Dangerous. The combo is interesting because I've never had a tach on the bike but the only reason I bought it is that my bike sits outside at work all day and the sun burnt out the display to the point I could only see it in a dark garage with my hands cupped over it and my face right there. I missed the clock and I use trip B for oil change reminders. The bar mounted tach would be better but I have a windshield bag with my toll pass and sunglasses in it and I understand they don't get along with the bar mounted tach. My windshield bag is more important to me than a tach. My limited has a tach but I only look at it occasionally when bored on the interstate.
Are you really lugging the motor or do your riding buddies just ride full throttle all the time? Lugging is something you have to feel and would be very hard to tell someone is lugging from another bike. Just because your riding style doesn't take it to the red line every shift, doesn't mean you are lugging the motor. A tach is going to tell you the RPM but it's not going to tell you if you are lugging the bike. Again, it's a feel thing. When you feel it, downshift.
Information is always good so get a tach if you want one but my recommendation would be to tell your friends to shut up, you know how to ride a bike!
I mounted my used power vision on the bars and used it for RPM's and other read outs. You can buy a used PV with cable and mounting bracket. Just hook it up to use for monitoring the engine and not pay a license fee to use it as a tuner. I got mine for $100 shipped
The very first modification I made on my 2011 Roadking Classic when I purchased her new was to add the Nacelle mounted tachometer with the billet bracket. I do not believe this is offered anymore in North America. I have seen a number of posts over the years on riders asking about the handlebar mounted tachs and inevitably, there is the touting of the all in one speedo/tach combination. A tach the size of a quarter between your legs is just bling. Its like putting a rind stone face on a new Rolex.
If this bike does have the old MM fuel injection....it makes setting hot/cold idle much more easily. Having a tach is nice for that procedure.
But just for riding.....a Harley ridden on the street doesnt really need a tach. Ride enough and get familiar with the bike....learn its characteristics.
Someone said earlier....you need to be looking at the road. Couldnt have said it better.
