Default Cam chain question

I have a 2006 Ultra and was planning of doing a S&S chain drive cam chest install with the hydraulic tensioners and the 551 cams. I have been reading that when Harley moved to the hydraulic tensioners they changed the chains. It doesn't look like the S&S kit includes these new chains so I was wondering if I should buy the 2007 primary and secondary cam chains along with the kit?

In a word, yes. You will need 2007 ^ cam chains as they are roller chains as opposed to the Morse link chains. One thing to note, make sure the cams you buy are for a TC88 as they have smaller journal ends. A 2007 and up cam won't fit into the early cases. Drill down exactly what the kit has in it (as you are now) and find out if the cam plate has bearings or if the cams run in parent material. A "conversion cam" has different size journal ends (smaller on the inside, larger on the outside).

Thanks Nomadmax. Yes the S&S kit is for a 2006 and is the chain drive conversion to hydraulic tensioners.

Just look at the Screamin Eagle plate conversion kit and it will show you all the parts needed on the HD site.

I run the S&S cam plate with the hydraulic tensioners along with the 551ez start cams in my 06 flhtci. However they didn't make the 551 cam in a conversion cam so when I had my 88" rebuild to a 103" I had the cam journals machined to accept 2007 and up cams.

I did this to my 2001 Wide Glide TC88 with the 2007 complete HD cam chest and the Andrews 21N cams. It is an awesome cam and the conversion, with SE adjustable pushrods, is very straightforward.

I found Fueling inner and outer roller cam chains for a 2007 Ultra on ebay for $39 each. Does anyone know if they will work with the 2006 cam sprockets?

The Screamin' Eagle kit is NOT the same as using '07+ cam plate parts.... parts used between the two are different

The Screamin' Eagle plate conversion kit uses the older style cams with a cam plate designed to use them AND the newer hydraulic tensioners.... problem is, because it uses the OEM cams, the inner cam chain (behind the plate) will get a hydraulic tensioner, but will still be using the older link-style chain. Only the front chain is the newer roller chain...

The Screamin' Eagle kit is a 3/4 fix...... 2 new hydraulic cam tensioners, 1 new roller chain, and 1 older link style chain...

If you upgrade to the '07+ cam plate parts, with a conversion cam (fits older cases & newer cam plate), you will get a full fix... 2 new hydraulic cam tensioners and 2 new roller chains.. PLUS.. you get a better (higher flow) oil pump and the fun of getting some extra performance with an aftermarket cam/tune....

HD Bobber, are you saying the S&S kit comes with the roller cam chains or the Screamin Eagle?

I am unaware of the S&S kit mentioned, but check the parts list carefully...

Many aftermarket companies USED TO use HD parts to make kits for installation of standard or conversion cams, to help sell their cams...

Several years ago, the MoCo stopped selling HD parts to outside vendors... they now only sell to HD shops or consumers.... As a result, all those companies (ie: Andrew's cams, Woods cams, etc) no longer sell kits that contain HD parts... their kits either don't have all the parts necessary, or they have parts that are non-HD (usually their own parts). A kit using the aftermarket parts in place of HD parts can be much more expensive...

I believe Andrew's cams has a list of HD parts needed to complete an '07+ cam conversion on their web site.....
