Default Suspension inquiry

I have a '05 Ultra. Thinking of lowering it. Obviously, would like to do both front and rear. I ride 2-up about 50% of the time. Go with HD lowering kit? Or other kits on the market better for this? Will I lose anything of significance in ride quality? (Oh, reason for lowering: pure vanity. I like the way it looks better than stock.) TIA for suggestions/comments.

Tphil,

Don't do it! Ride quality will suffer as well as cornering clearence. The bike will look fine when you're on it, when you're not, look at somethin' else.

Wow -- thanks for the quick, and strong, warning response.

I wouldn't do it either. I already drag the footboards and jiffystand at stock height. I think the lowered bike would suffer too much loss of clearance. Others may disagree. Just my .02

OK,

From the other side.

My bike is lowered 1 1/4 inches front and back. Front has Progressive Spring lowering kit and rear is the Solow lowering kit (found on Ebay). I ride pretty crazy sometimes and have never rubbed a floorboard. I have touched the kickstand a couple of times but nothing to worry about. I also do not bottom out with the wife as long as I run around 12 psi in shocks.

Harley's low profile shocks suck and I hears very good things about the Progressive Springs so I used them (Harleys front kit fits 2002 and up and my bike is a 2000.\

Here is a picture of mine with lowering complete. You can see that this is a bagger turned sport bike. If I could afford an Ultra too I would have one and would leave the suspension alone for comfort. My bike handles great (much better than stock). The stock forks dip going into curves and the shocks are too spongy for me, but for long distance bagger riding the stock system is the way to go. If you like to ride fast and hit the curves then my bike works great.

I am new here but I ride a 06 U/Classic with Harley's low profile shocks and I like them. It lowers the rear 3/4" which was what I was looking for, so I would set with my knees bent more than stock with my feet on the ground. Gives me more feel or control setting in the saddle when stopped.

my .2 cents

I lowered just the rear with Progressive 412 shocks and am very happy with it. It handles BETTER than original and I have experienced no clearence problems. Here is a web sight that list all the different lengths etc. Stock rear height is 13" and 03 model year shocks fitt newer bikes.[sm=itsok.gif]

Terry:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you -- thanks for the information and opinions. Wow, your bike is what I was looking for when I was in the market to move from my '03 Heritage to a bagger. But they were finer than frogs hairs here in the Houston area... So I went with an '05 Ultra and did a Stage 1 with a SE EFI Race Tuner Kit download, K & N Filter, Samson Rolled Thunder oval pipes -- nice result. It is like the best of both worlds.

I've decided to leave the suspension stock -- doing a lot of combined riding, and I'll give up a little on the firmness to keep the comfort.
