So I have a lowered 2019 Heritage, I am 52 28 inseam. Very short gal. went in somewhere to talk about bagger bags for my bike and the sales guy was steering me towards a road king with air ride instead. I always heard dont mess with suspension of a road king because they will ride horribly. Thoughts?
He's an a$$ trying to make a commission on a new bike... All in spite of what you want or need... typical "used car salesman" mentality....
You have a mono-shock softail, from what I've read they are light years ahead of the older, softail frames when it comes to ride quality......If it fits you, NO NEED to upgrade to a touring frame.... just because you want some bags....
If you are looking for leather bags... the Leather Pro mentioned are really good. I have also seen a set of Boss Bags, and they are really nice too..
Might as well start where your gonna end up. Freewheeler
oh bullshit. there is absolutely no reason why she has to go to a trike. i hate, i mean really freaking hate, the stereotype of chicks on trikes. if you need a trike, sure, no problem. but to immediately say, 'she's a chick, she needs a trike', is sexist and demeaning.
this girl has about the same inseam that i do. i am not able to flatfoot both feet at a stop. do i care? no. i just do what i've always done, and that is to be aware of my surroundings. i don't pull into a downward facing parking spot. and you know what? there are a lot of times that even tall guys have to ask for help with a push.
Let me rephrase my original post, I went to an independent shop and he would be happy to measure out and put a bagger saddlebag next to it so I can see the impact before I did anything, but he just asked if I think I could handle a bagger. Told him I wasn't sure due to my size. Never tried it. He asked if I ever thought about a road king (lighter than SG). He stated with the right seat and air ride he could get me flat footed. I fell in love with the RKS styling, but never thought I could fit, back it up, maneuver it, because of my size. That's originally why I went with the Heritage. The person I spoke to is just as short as me.
This is why I asked the question about the air ride.
The old Softail frame made me feel i was part of the bike while the touring frame made me feel like i was riding on top of it.
You have a nice bike already. If you could test ride a RK with low seat and air ride would be better than buying a RK and trying to make it fit you only to find it did not work for you. My .02

Well just hold on there Skratch old pard. Did I say she should go to a trike because shes a chick? No I did not. I ride a trike and I'm not a chick. At least last time I checked. A trike will instantly eliminate most of the problems shes having is all. I went to a trike for medical reasons but maybe you should take one for a test ride. Gravel, backing, off camber parking lots..no problem. Keep an open mind grasshopper.
believe me, i have an open mind. i just hate to hear when people automatically push chicks to trikes, because, well, they're chicks. they can't possibly ride a 2 wheeler as good as any good ole strong male. if that wasn't your intent, then i apologize. i know quite a few people who have gone to trikes due to medical reasons, and i applaud them for still being in the wind.
I have the same inseam. I went the Road King route myself, with an 04. Stock height, though Ive used lowering shocks off and on. I also have a mechanical reverse, because I need it.
Ive wondered about the softails, especially with the slim primary. Ah well, I enjoy my RK.
Can you do it with a RK? Id say you can. But if you enjoy what you have, go enjoy that instead.
