Remove the tank and drain it. Get yourself some window sash chain at the hardware store. Feed it into the tank, put on the lid and shake the hell out of it. Use compressed air to blow out the pieces of lining (mind your eyes).

Clean it up, reinstall and always keep the tank topped off.

Never seen it all removed. Then when it isn't it will screw with the petcock and eventually the carb. I've replaced a couple of tanks with that crap in em. Maybe someone has a good solution other than find another tank?
Moonraker..

Nomadmax..have tried the chain and this stuff isn't coming off, with the exception of the stuff that already started to flake.
I did have to completely go thru the pump so it would be nice to get the bulk of it out.
Was planning to reline after?

Thanks.

I had a Moonraker on a 40 foot tower and a 1000 watt pair of "Shoes" for my "Slider" modified CB base station operating in the upper bands. When conditions were correct South Africa and Austraila were easy to reach.

Spent many all nighters chatting all over. Was a fun era...and we did not have to learn morse code .

Sorry to hijack the OP subject. JUst a thought. Could not the interior of the tank be sand blasted? I know it is interior and may be a little eaiser said then done, but a good shop should have flexable nozzles to do the job. Might be worth checking out.

I was only concerned with getting the loose stuff out that blocked the petcock screen. I won't put liner in a tank so I didn't care about getting it all out. The way I see it, if you can't get it loose/out with sash chain; what harm can it do? As you can see, tank liners wind up being more trouble than they're worth.

I have relined many tanks on bikes. I use the KBS coatings kit. comes with stripper, cleaner ,rust blast and the new liner. some advice, if you use this kit, you probably wont use all the liner in the can, you probably will only use about little less than 1/2 the can.,,,,,Kbs has videos on their website.. there are others out there...I just have used this kit..

I bought a 2001 FXSTS about 18 months ago... It only had 9.8K miles. Obviously it had spent a lot of time "just sitting"...

I had to completely disassemble & clean the carb... and my tank liner was peeling...

I sealed the tank openings, with some #6 shot inside the tank. I wrapped it well, in several blankets, so it fit snuggly in the dryer and wouldn't flop around. I then put the dryer on slow spin and let it spin for about 45 minutes..

When done, there were blotchy parts of the tank where the liner didn't come off the tank, but all the loose stuff was removed from the tank wall. I flushed/cleaned the tank well.... put it back together... and keep it topped off.

I haven't had an issue with the pieces of liner that stayed attached to the tank.

I haven't had an issue with any rust/corrosion.

The bike is running well...

I just replaced the liner in my ironhead. We had it red koted many years ago and it finally started coming off. I tried all kinds of methods to get that old liner out including scraping the bottom, top and sides with brake spoons and tire irons. I bought a box of drywall screws and threw them in there and shook it half to death. I scraped and cleaned and hosed it all out then did it some more. I also used a variety of picks to get the crap in the corners. I had it about a quarter full of lacquer thinner while I was cleaning. I didn't feel like that made much of a difference. After it was mechanically cleaned out I put some Caswell's epoxy gas tank sealer (2 coats) and it's now rock hard and clean.

I also cleaned out the petcock, fuel line, and rebuilt the carb. The crap from the tank had been settling down in the carb.
