98% percent of the time, people who post threads about spring type cam chain tensioners want to be told "they'll be ok, check them again in 10K miles". There is is no safe mileage or wear measurement for OEM spring tensioner shoes that are at the very least 14 years old. If you don't have money to change the shoes, you don't have money to fix it when they break apart.
That's it in a nutshell right there. That plastic gets brittle over time and will eventually shatter. As others have said you're already half way there to replacing them so I'd give it a try. On my 03 I used a tax return to rebuild the whole cam chest area with an upgraded oil pump and plate because I don't ever intend to sell the bike. From what you have said I'd suspect just replacing those shoes will do the trick for you.
You are at the point it should be done. Others have given you a lower cost option rather than the full HYD replacement. Are results of not doing it worth the risk?
Only you know.

So i order the CYCO pads and adjustable push rods and putting them in when they get here. Any suggestions on cams to put in? I want more power and low end torque.
It is my understanding that most high performance cams bring in horsepower by letting in more air which usually results in more power at the higher RPM range. That's why I didn't go for fancy cams when I rebuilt my cam chest area, I just put in new stock cams.
If there are any that specifically increase low rpm torque over stock (without other engine work required) I'd be interested to know.
dumb question but I order 2 shoes right from CYCO if I'm replacing both tensioner shoes? Really dumb I'm sure.
No, not a dumb question...they say the dumbest question is the one you never ask. However, youll need the two shoes, inner and outer, dealer supplied o-rings and cover gasket, parts lube and adjustable push rods, *four long rubber bands and four large paper clips (youll understand this later)* and borrow or rent a 24 bolt cutter. Yes a FSM helps as it also has replacement detail, but watching you tube vids over and over on how to remove and install the new push rods helped me tremendously. Yes, the package instructions were good, but seeing the procedure is a plus. When it comes to the cams, new or original, check your local indys and see if theyll do some of the work youre not tooled up to do if this might be the case. It wasnt as difficult a replacement/repair as it seemed, but thats 20/20. Personally, my 02 TC88 EGS, fully stock has well enough power/ torque for me, but to each his own. Good luck.
I thought you were tight on funds and now youre doing a cam upgrade? \0/

Thanks for the reply! I've watch a few videos about it and understand the rubber bands and paper clips. I am probably going to replace the cams next paycheck next month so thats where the funds come in. I wanted to go in once but seeks like I won't be able to because the cams worth it are very pricey. Thank you for the help!!!

Many probably aren't familiar with wooden or plastic spring loaded clothes pins that are used for drying clothes on a line ,but they sure are easy to use to hold the push rod tubes up when working on them.
