However, if they say full retail of the used price, i.e., what the price is in the Black Book , then it is just a sales trick.
But here is when trading at the same dealer for years can be a little in your favor. Just say that you bought your current bike at your local dealer and paid MSRP. OK, they made about a $4000 profit on a Touring bike. Now they want you to trade in on a new one 4 years later. The trade-in figure I would tell them I want is full retail, less about $1000, if they are still quoting full retail on the new bike. The $1000 less is their profit (when they re-sell it) for handling the sale of the bike you traded in.
In the example above, they may not make that deal, but it's a good starting place for negotiations. What I try to avoid is letting them make $4000 on the new bike they're selling me, AND, $4000 on the traded in bike, by giving me a lowball trade-in figure. I don't think they deserve to make $8000 on me.
