The worst I've seen them was coming through Macon on I-75 many years ago. The complete front of the black bike was white. Don't know how many I ate that day. They burn like heck if they get in your eyes.
The wet towel and let it rest on the windshield is your best advice. I have a CTS, Sierra SLT and a road glide, paint on all 3 are coated. Water hose removes them as long as they aren't on there for days. The acid in them will etch the clear. Ive done a bunch of cars with the "Flat front end", and they get hammered with bugs. I tell them upfront that the etching can't be polished out, depending how bad it is. Kind of like bird crap that sits on the hood and bakes in the sun. If there isn't a substantial sacrificial layer underneath, the clear will get etched.
