The connector on the top of the tank which the wiring harness plugs into is a Harley only special connector. It is a right angle connector and fits snugly into the plate that screws to the top of the fuel tank. It has two mating connectors. One outside the tank the other inside the tank.
It is part number 72435-00. connects to the main wiring harness outside the tank and connects to the main internal harness of the fuel tank. If it was available it costs $71.99 but has been obsoleted.
I found an replacement on the internet and ordered it but the connector to the internal wiring harness did not fit. The mfgr I ordered it from did not have the mating connector and Harley does not either.
The problem I had which required I replace it was one of the three pins burnt up for some reason and melted the plastic around the pin
I improvised by drilling a hole through the connector and ran a wire from outside the tank through the hole into the tank to complete the circuit. Hokey but worked.
It was stuff like that that made me decide to order a whole new unit because of problems like that connector. The bike is 18 years old and lots of miles of wear and tear which is probably why I am having problems like this.
Thanks Dan. That is the one I found and also and eventually ordered but the inside tank connector does not fit and I could not find any replacement that did. Had to improvise.
