Relaxed the grip, looked straight ahead, and pinched the butt cheeks. LOL I been told the grate is 6inches wide with 2” spacing. You do have to steer it because if you don’t it will keep sucking you one direction. At one point I used up half a lane in maybe 40-50 feet. Funny how your vision narrows down to this single point looking for that proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. But hey, that is why we ride, for the experiences.
I've been over that bridge in a car and swore I'd never take a bike over it! I could feel my car moving, could only imagine what it would do to a bike. Plus the fact that it is a LONG section of grating! I don't normally mind a reasonable span of grating, but that bridge is the worst I've ever been across.
A lot of that has do with your tires. If your front tire has a grove in the middle of the tire it will tend to follow the road more
The original poster doesn't say the year of his bike, but the stock tires on the pre2009 bikes are scary horrible. In fact, the main motivation to trade-in my 2002 Road Kind for the 2009 was the rain grooved highways in my area.
Try going over the Mackinac bridge in rainy 45 degree weather when there's construction leaving the only open lane being the grated one where you can see the water 200 feet below you. For 2 miles.
Done that one a few times on the bike but never in the rain.
Crossing the Brookport bridge into Paducah Kentucky. Crap, that grate surface makes your bike get squirrely under your butt. The front wheel darts side to side as it goes from one row of grates to the next, a good 6". It is a tall bridge but heights do not bother me at all due to being a rock climber in my early years. That damn grate. You catch yourself staring at the rails and on coming cars praying the grate takes you away from the impending obstacle. That damn grate. If you have rode on a grooved highway before it is like that but 100 times worse.
I will never cross that sucker on my bike again.
Any one else crossed the demon bridge?
I crossed that bridge several years ago. There was a light rain and was glad I was going straight. Then if my memory is right, the bridge makes a slight turn as you approach the KY side. That really seemed strange for a bridge and just added to my concern.
Don't know if any of you guys have went over the Harry Nice bridge from Va to Md, that sumbictch is scary on a windy day once you get to the top of it.
