Go to a good Radio Shack, Circuit City or the like. There may be wireless links you can use. Also there are amplifiers designed to overcome the line loss issue. I used to do a lot of this but not any more. But I'm sure there are solutions that, with a little ingenuity will work. Post if you get it going. Lots of others will find it usefull.

The PCIII does not (to my knowledge, at least) draw any power from the cable so that wouldn't be a factor. The data rate may be low enough that it would work with quite a long cable; don't know about that either. It's probably a safe bet the the length restrictions pertain mainly to devices which require power and/or high data rates. As suggested, the PCIII may well require neither.
Why don't you just take your computer/monitor/keyboard/mouse out to the garage for a few minutes (assuming it has a USB interface)?
