Default Adjustable rider backrest adjustment

Hello folks,
I recently had a HD dealer in BC supply and install an adjustable rider backrest while on a weekend ride there from Alberta. I am not overly happy with it. Even with the backrest adjusted to it's full rear position, I think it pushes too far forward on the rear of the front seat, leaving a huge gap in the seat slot. My concern is that a ton of rain is going to get under the seat when bike is parked overnight while it's pouring. I do a lot of weekends into BC, staying in motels, and sometimes, it's very rainy. I have read online that possibly shimming the front of the backrest bracket up by a 1/4" may make a difference. I think I'll try that, but thought I'd see if anyone here has any thoughts first. Note that the pics below are with the backrest in it's rear most position AND I should've moved the passenger strap before I took the pics. The part numbers appear to be correct for my 2017 Road King standard, with stock seat.
Thanks!
Al

Mine is bad, but not that bad, but they all have a gap. I’ve ridden and parked my bike in some torrential downpours and, so far, no issues of which I am aware.

Mine is pretty close to that. I ride in rain with no issues. But it rarely sits overnight in rain.

It looks like it’s not inserted all the way. As it goes in it will go to the rear even more. Is it locked in all the way?

Yeah, it's all the way in. There is a latch to keep it from coming out. In the pic, it's all the way forward. It tips back when you lean against it, but with no pressure on it, a spring pushes it all the way forward. It's the adjustable one so you can control how far back it will go. I'm pretty happy with it. On long rides, I'll adjust it once in a while to change position.
