Default FP3 Issues and Trouble Codes

I just installed a V&H FP3 and so far my bike is running pretty rough, still trying to work it out with Customer Support. I checked the Trouble Codes and I'm getting a P1003, System Relay Contacts Open. Can anyone tell me what this means and possible solutions? I'm not going to lie, I'm not very "mechanical". I'm going to Sturgis for the first time and trying to avoid huge cost of going to Harley or Bike Shop...Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What kind of bike do you have have ? How old is the battery ? Start by testing the voltage , get yourself a volt meter . Having the battery load tested would be a good idea , just to be sure it's good . Your readings should be 12v + bike just sitting ignition on . When the bike is at 2000 rpm , your reading should be 14v + , but no higher than 14.8 , not above 15v .

Check your relay connections for a lose / broken wire . Look inside the connector as well at the pins and make sure they are not broken / bent etc . Unplug the relay and check it for a build up of corrosion . Corrosion can also build up inside the relay as well , possible you may need to replace that relay .

Get yourself some contact electrical cleaner and spray all connections to clean up any corrosion . Things to focus on would be battery cables ( both end ) tight and clean . Clean all your relays , fuses and fuse box . At the same time inspect all wiring and connectors for damage , focusing on the system relay ( due to the error code ) .

How did the bike run before you installed the FP3 ?

I have an '08 Road King Classic, battery is only a year old. When riding, my battery sensor shows 14.2v, sitting it shows, 11.9v - 12.1v. Again, i apologize for my ignorance when it comes to all things mechanical, but what is the relay system? Is that the fuse box? I added 4" RC Exhaust Slip-ons and a Arlen Ness Stage 1 Big Sucker and started the bike started to heat up and pop more so someone told me to get the FP3 and it would fix that.

Ok , battery seems to fine . If you aren't using a battery tender , I would suggest purchasing one and plugging it in when your not using the bike for more than a couple days , just to keep the voltage up , and to maintain the battery .

The system relay should be mounted either under the right side cover or behind the battery . Sorry , not familiar with the 08 .

This link may help , look at #5 ...

I'm guessing that you already had the error code before you purchased the FP3 , so cleaning the connections to the relays ( or replacing system relay ) and cleaning fuses / fuse box might remedy the error . Once you've cleaned everything up , clear the code and see if it returns .

Contact V&H and find out what map they recommend for your bike as well , if you haven't done that . Guessing you did , since your dealing with them about your issue .

The system relay gets energized when the ign is turned on and the kill switch is on. The contacts make and power is supplied to fuel pump, Ign Coil and ECM. The fuel pump will run for a few seconds then shut off unless the engine is rotating. If your bike is running I doubt you have a relay problem. I would clear the DTC and see if it comes back.

As soon as I'm off work, I'm supposed to upload the latest map I have flashed to the ECM and V&H will look at it and recommend something. Is there something specific to use when cleaning the fuses/relays? Thanks again for your help.

Thank you, the diagrams and pics are great. Do you mind if I ask where you got those? I'm curious what the plug under my Data Port is, it looks like the data port but already has something plugged into it.

Nice looking bike. I had a 08 Classic and loved that bike. Bought it from a guy who lived in the UP of Michigan. He won it in a raffle for his son's hockey team and didn't ride. I flew out and rode it home.

The pages come from a HD Electrical Diagnostic Manual. I sent you a PM.

Yup , you can purchase a can of electrical contact cleaner , I get mine at the local Canadian Tire store . When I do my spring maintenance I also clean up all my connections as well . I know it may seem overkill , but I've never had an issue in all the years I've been riding , knock on wood .

Thanks Vernal for stepping in , you always have great info to share , very helpful to others .
