Took a 3 hour ride yesterday. When I got home I noticed a large chunk of rubber missing from my rear tire. Didn't run over or hit anything that I can remember. Tire is a Michelin Commander II. Tire has approx 6500 miles on it and is around 1 1/2 years old. Always checked regularly and kept at 40 psi. Going to take it and have it replaced by the place I bought it from. Does this damage look like a tire defect or road damage? What do you guys think?
Shoot I'm surprised you didn't feel it in the way home and that it managed to get you home... Good thing it did! If I were to take a guess I'd say you ran over something sharp and it got a good chunk.
Youch! If I had to guess, I'd say something sharp cut into the tire and peeled it.
I had a Metzler 888 on my last bike that developed a BIG tumor as something underneath was separating. I started noticing a little more whine like a cupped tire so I looked and found it...I wonder if it would have blown out or ended up with a big chunk missing like this.
I would sent the picture to the company and try nicely to get a new tire replaced for free. I had metzler tire do the same thing and was happy I noticed it before an accident. There customer service was so bad that I no longer buy metzler tires.

Good luck. I had a brand new C2 for my old metric bike that had a high spot. I contacted Michelin and they wouldn't do squat since I bought it from Amazon.
However, I contacted Amazon and they sent me a replacement within a 5 minute phone conversation.
Good luck OP. But Michelin's customer service didn't do anything for me.

Agreed. That was the first Metz I ever ran and would have been willing to give another one a try if they had better service. My tire had less than a thousand miles on it, tons of tread left but they didn't do anything about it.
Same tire I am running, no problems so far. What pressure is in the tire NOW? Heat weakens tire structure and low pressure causes excessive heat build up. You may have run over something sharp but a big chunk appears to have just come "unglued" and high heat can be the culprit.
I think that's a defective tire. I would show who ever you bought the tire from and try and get it replaced. I had a Dunlop i had problems with and called them directly. They replaced the tire with no problem.
