What type of riding do you do and where, where are your current shift points (rpm), so you ride more solo or 2-up, whats your budget, are you doing the work or farming out to a shop? Too many questions based on your initial post to suggest anything other than ride what you have and then make a guess later...
Certainly not knocking the S&S 509 cams... I know nothing about them....
Just for variety sake, my go to cam for an OEM 88' has always been an Andrews 21 cam..... They come on about 1700 rpms and go strong up to about 5K rpms... good bolt-in, mid range cam... where most people ride...
