No more knocking
Over the winter I changed out the cams, cam chest and oil pump on my 2006 Ultra Classic. I started hearing what sounded to me like rod knock at idle. I did a little research and decided to check the compensator. Lo and behold the nut was loose and the ramps looked worn and scarred up. I replaced the compensator, torqued the nut, buttoned everything back up and the knock is gone.

The '06 compensator used to be a 3-part replacement, #40266-85 shaft extension, #40308-94 Compensating sprocket, and #40299-83A cam slider sprocket... but I haven't dealt with one in years, so unknown if they have updated any parts/numbers...
FWIW.....
The '06 still has the old style compensator that rarely has an issue.... well, except they did change the torque sequence because some of them had the compensator bolt come loose...
The "problem" compensators started when they redesigned them in preparation for the 6 speed and 96" engine... they first used them (#40296-06) in the '06 dyna series bikes, along with the 6speed trans. They were quite problematic. They had already done a part upgrade (#40296-06A) when all the bikes got them in '07 along with the 96" engines with 6 speed trans... They stayed problematic through several changes/upgrades until the Rushmore compensator (#42200064A) in 2014. Those were used through the rest of the Twin Cam run, and were the least problematic of all the post '07 twin cam compensators....
Oops, just realized I was responding to "btsom"... pretty sure you are well aware of the info in the FWIW portion of my response... sorry about that..
