Hello peeps. I am looking to buy HD SE Heavy Breather Elite Air Cleaner kit (https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/e...Kit/p/29400406) for my 2019 SGS. I have Reinhart slipons on the bike right now and that's about it. Do I need to do anything else to the bike or would this kit be pretty much bolt on and ride? Also, if I have slip-ons and this kit, is this considered "Stage-1"?
If not, what would I need in addition to the kit? I want this done right. Would I void the warranty if I install this kit myself? I know HD is little weird with these aftermarket things.
Thanks. Could you expand on that? Is that something that I can plug in and do myself? Do I need a dealer to do it for me? Sorry, never had to use a tuner before. My last "Stage 1" was when I installed a jetkit on my 99 R1 lol...
I can tell you what I did on my 2019 SGS, but be ready for many different opinions.
I did S&S MK45's when new before I left the dealer. It was fine, but I wanted a little more. So I did the SE intake, but HD, and everyone else, says you need a tuner or it won't run properly since more air is getting to the engine. So, I bought the Screaming Eagle Pro Street Tuner and cables and did it myself. Very easy to do, and you will not void your warranty. Don't expect much in terms of additional power, but it does run better. I still wanted a little more, so I put in the HD torque cam. This provided a hefty improvement in power, and got way louder exhaust sound at the same time. For me, it has plenty of power for how I ride, and I still get close to 45 MPG.
From the instructions that are on the link you reference. - "You must recalibrate the ECM when installing this kit. Failure to properly recalibrate the ECM can result in severe engine damage. (00399b)"
Several options to keep your warranty. You can have the dealer flash the ecm with the proper download. Or, you can go the route 702 above mentions with the factory tuner. This will keep your warranty intact with an EPA compliant tune.
Most people say screw the warranty and get a real tuner ( device ) and have it dyno tuned for the best results. When is your warranty up? If it's close, screw it and put it on a dyno or contact Fuel Moto for a tuner with one of their canned maps that match your modifications. Either one of these options will void the remaining part of your warranty but it will also give you the best results.
Either way, it's going to get expensive to install an already expensive intake with very little gain in performance. Put a K&N filter in your current intake and you'd probably get pretty close to the same results performance wise. Wouldn't look as good though.
Well, Damn. That does sound expensive. I am not sure when my warranty expires exactly. It’s a 2019 with 2k miles on it.
so pretty much any aftermarket air intake requires tuner huh?
unless you forked over the dinero for an extended warranty yours will be over in 21, whenever you bought the bike date wise. The warranty is only valid for two years.
I did a Stage 2 last winter and my warranty is over in June so my ride is getting a FuelMoto header/ slip ons and powervision tuner over the winter
I've heard some dealers ,if they do work on your bike for other warranty work, will look in the ECM for a non-HD tuner and then will null and void you powertrain warranty. If you take it to a dealership they will tune to EPA standards. There will be a lot of suggestions of what tuner to install if you want a little performance.

"They" don't "look in your ecm". General SOP whenever a bike comes in is to connect it to the digital tech, which checks for updates, recalls, etc, if the system finds that the ecm has been modified with an aftermarket tune (no, putting the stock map back on won't prevent detection), it automatically flags your bike
The Screamin Eagle Pro Street Tuner (the one that is legal with your warranty) has the ability to do more than just the canned tunes listed in the software, it is just not open ended at the Pro Super Tuner is. You can change the mufflers, put on a high flow intake, and use the Pro Street Tuner on a dyno to fine tune the bike with a still EPA legal tune (which will leave some power on the table).
