I just traded in my Fatboy for an Electra Glide Ultra Classic. My new bike will bedelivered in about four weeks. I was talking to one of my co-workers and he was telling me things I would need to do to this 2008 Ultra. I was told the"stock" bike runs very hot and I would need to do some modifications. A few things he mentioned were 1) I would need to install an oil cooler, 2) Change the exhaust (he installed Vance & Hines Big Shot Duals saying this was better than slip-ons), and3) Stage one kit. I'm curious as to what others have done. He said these modification lowered the tempeture 20 degrees. Making the switch from aFatboy, this is new ground for me. If this information is accurate, please share any modifications you may have made to your 2008 Ultra (this may be common to all Electra Glides) in this area. I would also appreciate the cost associated with the modifications.
'07 - '08 ALL RUN HOT... You can thank the EPA for that...
1) Oil Coolers ONLY WORK if the bike is moving and can drop the heat by 10 - 15 degrees
2) Changing the Exhaust-Air System & adding a Fuel Management System (Stage 1) Will reduce the heat by allowing more fuel to the system - TD will reduce the heat factor even more then just slip-on mufflers & OEM Headers
3) Going with a QUAILITY SYN OIL (like Mobil 1 - AMSOIL - Even HD Syn) will help reducing the heat
Even after doing the above I might suggest RJ's Orignals Heat Shields as if you ride 2-up the Passanger will still be getting alot of hot air on there Rt Foot... http://www.rjsoriginals.bizland.com
I just had Rinehart true duals, a power commander and a big sucker air filter installed on my 07 Ultra. At the same time I had the 1000 mile service done. Syn3 in the motor and Redline in the trans. It runs a lot better, cooler, and the 5th gear whine is gone. I plan to change to Amsoil in the very near future. Hope this helps.
If you suppose that Harley's run hot, you haven't rode an 06' Honda ST1300...water cooled I might add - with the latest ECU technology. That was the hottest lump of moltan Lava I ever rode!! For those that think water cooled is the answer ...FORGET IT!! I sold that bike after 5 months of ownership!!
