Default Extended bags and RGS vs RGL

All -

Currently on a Road King and looking to maybe upgrade. I want more touring capability and I really like the idea of a GPS in the dash. I know I can put it on my phone - it's a PITA to look at while riding.

So I was shopping the RGS and RGL - dig the extended bags on the RGS but I'm pretty sure the RGL gives me more storage.

Anyone really comment on trade offs between the two? I suppose I could add a Tour Pack to the RGS and get both but the extended bags - they seem more for looks than actually usable increase in payload - or am I off?

Regardless of bike - how much "extra" did the extended bag give you?

ETA - I'm guessing the Limited would make the most sense if bags don't really add enough usable space to warrant a RGS+tour pack but how hard would it be to replace the rear floorboards with RGS style? Passenger prefers that. I'd think just mount and peg swap.

I've got a 16 RGU. After stock bag I went with some AdvanBlack extended bags. Got a little extra storage, the "extra" part is the outer half of the bag beyond what sits on the bag mount under the bags. Then the outer part "steps down", and you can toss stuff "down there"... but not a lot really. Now I have the HD stretched bags... that "extra area" is about half of the extended bags "extra" space. It is really just about looks....

I went with the RGU, and added the stretched/extended bags for a look I like, and then made the tour pack detachable.

Which is cheaper, a RGS with the bags you want, then adding all the stuff for a tour pack add on OR getting the RGL and switching out the saddlebag bottoms?

I dont think the extended bags add much at all.

I think you want passenger pegs (that are on the special), not boards. That's simply a matter of visiting your parts department. Probably $2-250 to get it done if memory serves. I hate those boards (interfere with my calfs when I'm backing up, etc), they look awful, and I never have a passenger, so off they went, and I put those pegs on.

Depending on the color you select, you could get a Limited, and order the saddlebag bottoms from a Special, already painted. I did that on my 2020 RGL. I find the little bit of extra you get from the extended bags is handy. You can fit tools and other small items into that part of the bags easily. Remember, they're +1 in the front, and +3 in the rear. And IMHO, they look better too.

Also make the TourPak detachable and you have a bike that can be set up for your style and needs, from ride to ride.

There is a link in my signature for my 2020 Road Glide Limited project. It might be helpful to you.

I like the look of the extended "Special" bags but there isn't much more storage to justify the cost. I do have them on my RGU and they do look awesome...

But don't you also need the rear fascia of a special, otherwise they look awful?

I would definitely recommend that as well. The ***-end of the Limiteds are really ugly, IMHO. Changing bags or not, it needs to be addressed regardless.

Appreciate all the answers - I think, looking things over - the Limited is the best solution for the issue at hand.

Now to see what they'll do...

I'm with Redbeard719. When we did our custom RGL I figured out pretty quickly that I wanted extended bags. I wanted the bags from a Special, mostly because I wanted some side view of the pipes, and because I like the angled lower lines of the Special bags. Luckily I was able to swing a direct swap into the extended bags at no extra cost. And then of course came the Top Shop CVO rear fender and so on to get the look. My wife particularly likes this view of the bike and we consider it money WELL spent.

My desire has zero to do about looks and all about utility. I mean paint has to match and all, not driving a 93 Civic with 4 colors but I just want the space to haul my stuff.
