As for tires, rip the old rock hard D402's off the bike since they are just going to cause some handling problems and even worse in the road ruts/ seams with the age of them, and install a set of Commander II's on the bike.
Note: Not the Commander III's, but search to find a set of the older Commander II's. If you can not find a set of II's, then look for a set of Ae's.
How even new 402's act in ruts and seam (white knuckling it), verses the II's or even AE's, is night and day difference.
To add, when you go to rebuild the CV carb, don't get sucked into the over price tune kits.
All you need is slightly larger main jet and idle jet, and maybe, #4 brass washer if you need to raise the needle/can go with the replacement OEM needle if you need rich up the mid range as the slide is coming up.
