Need help/guidance...California registration queations
I have the opportunity to buy a 1995, 1 owner bike, with only 3900 miles on it. I am not concerned about that. I know that there will be issues due to the low mileage. But this is a true unicorn for me.
My problem and question comes as this bike is listed on the VIN as a 49 state bike, and with the low mileage California (to my understanding) would call this a NEW bike and therefore require it to pass the smog requirements.
Is there any way to get this bike registered in California?
I hope you find a "Paper" way, but that 7500 mile rule really messes things up for CA residents buying Out-of State vehicles except for a few exemptions
But ...
1995? ... What model is it? ... the early electronic didn't "store" mileage in the ECM and of course mechanical speedo/odometers didn't "store" mileage other than on the ODO. You could to put a closest to, but over 7500mi Speedo on for reg purposes then switch back and do not resell until mileage is above what it's registered as (or switch back again to 2nd speedo to sell)
Or depending who buy from (if you can work together) ... mark mileage as over 7500 (depending on what the "certificate of ownership" and "release of liability" require) and then don't register it until you get there.

It is actually a Buell S2. Original owner. Every shred of documentation. Should have been the bike I bought back then. Owned an S3T (where user name comes from) and had to sell it.
it is a Unicorn...probably wont come across one like this ever.
But thats ok. Theres a reason.
Thanks.
By the way, thanks again for the help with the wheel swap. It is looking and working great.
Only applies to new vehs.
Walk in with your title.
write any mileage down
They wont question it.
Ive registered many
vehss. Even from out
of state.
Never had a problem

I've researched that CA 7500 mi rule and exemptions many times before now and unless something has changed it won't be as easy as byersmtrco makes it out to be. But good on him if it worked out
Just the fact that he stated "even from out of state" indicates maybe that he might not understand what exactly is going on here ... the Buell is registered out of state, isn't it?
There was a thread on here may a year or so ago where someone tried to do just that and CA DMV "blackballed" that VIN ... keep that in mind
.

yes. It is currently registered in Louisiana, and the VIN reads as a 49 state bike, not a CA approved. I read the blackballed thing also....that was my biggest concern.
Buy a beater that will make it to LA, the state, not the city. Find a way to total it while there. Buy your replacement bike in LA and ride home with proof of replacement vehicle bought out of state.
