The way I was taught, the other reason to warm it up is to help suspend the contaminants into the oil so they will flow out while draining instead of laying on the bottom of your oil pan. Sounded good to me so that's what I always do. Good luck with that filter though......
I had to use a cheap end cap type and drilled three holes in it then drilled screws in the end of the filter through the cap. It wasn’t the cleanest but it came off
