I built my Sportster to take on trails, and it was a real handful off road, couldnt imagine using my Road King. This is the Sportster I built, its a 2018 1200 Iron, at least it was.

Very good job. In my 50 years of riding there is no where I have not seen a Sporty . From dirt to snow to ice racing and hill climbing.
Ill take my ultra on gravel roads and dirt roads....and small water crossings. Thats ONLY if I have to during a trip and/or if theres something I want to see and its on that route.
No way.....Ill take it off road just for fun....no matter what kinda tires are installed. Bikes are just too heavy. Not to mention.....drive belts and off-roading dont mix well.
I was talking to guy at my tire shop. I was interested in an adventure type tire, for my limited, for a ride to Alaska. I figured they’d hold up better on rough roads, and a few fire roads. He said the weight of the bike would wear them out before I got there. Plus, there would be a very limited selection due to size.
Unclear as to why you bought a Road King in the first place? It's a 2020 so you just purchased it recently. After you set it up for the trails, that it's not designed for, what are your plans for when you actually want to go out and do some road touring, which it was designed for? Are you going to swap all your stuff back and forth? Ride the super slab with off road tires and changed out suspension? I'm confused why you just didn't buy 2 cheaper bikes that will let you do both..........?
