You want to be carrying a different set of tires, generally, and mount them once you’re up there. There are several places. You can also ship the tires ahead.

Thr earlier 16” wheel is far more limited on off-road tires with sufficient load rating, but there are some. There is also the automotive tire, including some interesting off-road truck tires. A number of heavy bike folk have done well using this setup for trips up the Dalton Highway and the like.

True, the likes of a touring Harley is not a KLR. But it’s still an eminently capable bike.

I went on a mountain trail on mine once, front tire deflected off a rock and had me pointed downhill with the front tire up against a tree for a couple hours in the middle of nowhere, no more 900 lb dirt bikes for me.

Define " off road " it, you mean the occasional dirt road and graded fire trails or taking that bitch up the side of the hill to see what's on the other side?

A 850lbs motorcycle involved it does make a difference and choice tires is a small one.

That’s what I want to do some day. Ride from southernmost point in USA to prudhoe Bay, AK. While there take a dip in Arctic. I believe my SG could make it all the way upto Arctic circle point. Beyond that it’s going to be a challenge. Keep thinking about this a bit.

Check out Million Dollar Brogan on You Tube ./... he's ridden across the Australian outback, into the ocean and done more off road riding on a Road King than many dual sport riders would ever dare to do:

One of the more entertaining channels, I cringe, laugh and just plain get engrossed in his antics .... besides Australia he made it to places in Alaska that very few have attempted.
