Default Top speed question on ‘99 FLHTCU-I

Good Morning to all on the site!
I have a ‘99 FLHTCU-I with a Hannigan trike. This is my first Harley. I’ve always had Honda Gold Wings and Valkyries.
My question is: My MPH top end is 70MPH. Wide open that’s all I’ve got! I’ve looked and saw that the throttle blade is open as far as it can be with the throttle wide open. The bike has 31K miles on it. It was previously owned by two elderly gentle men (one after another) so it’s not been abused. I believe the motor is the 88 cu.in version. The trike kit adds about 300lbs. to the whole rig. I’m 200-ish lbs. Am I expecting more out of what I have? I’m not trying to set a land speed record or anything but would like to at least keep up with traffic! Any info about this will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry in East China Mi.

What RPMs are you running at WOT? If it's turning above 4500 rpm PO may have changed the sprocket ratio for better off line performance. At that age it could be a fuel flow issue, weak fuel pump, clogged filter. If it's a carb bike look into tuning. How old are the plugs? Start with good basic service and inspection work through the other suggestions.

FWIW Stock w/o the trike kit was only good for 100MPH + or -

I can tell you my 2003 bike struggles to get to 100, so I would venture a guess that driveline loss and wind drag takes a bit of power out of your sails.

Normally I would say to change the rear end gears to get more top end at the expense of bottom end torque, but IIRC those are Ford IRS rear axles with 2.73 gears.... you don't get much more of a highway gear than that..... you may want to verify the rear gears are 2.73's ... easy to do with jack stands

What are you getting for RPM's? Can you pull to 5000 and what are you getting for speed at 3500 RPM's?

You have the MM Fuel Injection, personally I'd locate the harness needed to remove the FI and get a good carb on there

I suspect it`s faster than 70 in 4th gear.
Doesn`t solve the problem but points out you`ll have to either alter the gearing or add HP

( I would think this rig ought to go 85MPH )
