Stock clutch spring
Is there a way to tell if you have a stock spring in or a performance? I changed out my basket and plates but was going to use the spring I have and later down the road buy the conversion kit. Was also thinking about buying the barnett clutch spring until then but I have mo idea if the one I have is an aftermarket spring. It didnt have stock friction plates in it when I changed them. Anyone know the thickness of a stock spring? Is there to know if the spring is bad or do they even go bad?
The HD springs have a dab of paint on them. Different colours for different spring ratings. Does yours have a dab of paint on it? If so, what colour? I can't remember which is what, but someone else probably will.

No paint on it anywhere and its the thickness of a nickel, maybe a hair thicker
I believe it may be a screamin eagle, plates and spring, but not positive

Finding a reliable clutch spring code, by paint color or number, for Harley clutches is a nightmare... Many people have collected and shared data, but there is no reliable "part #, color code, diaphragm pressure list" from the MoCo itself, that I've been able to find.....
I believe part of the problem is the myriad of springs they came up with for various models/special models/ SE upgrades/ and various year groupings.... not all had colors, some had stripes, others "dabs/spots" of color, and some multi-stripes...
Here's one partial chart I saved from several years ago... I forget the years it applies to but I believe it was around 2012 when doing research for my '12 Limited.... however, I've seen SE springs and OEM springs with no colors too... so it's certainly not definitive...

Some of the springs will have an HD part number stamped on them... you can always google that number and it MAY bring up which spring it is...

Don't know if this will help, but this list was compiled by a guy on the HTT forum who had several springs that he believed he knew the origin off... It lists spring thicknesses, so if you measured your spring, it may give you some guidance.. the pressure test was HIS own test, I forget the methodology..
Three Yellow Stripes (OEM from 2010 Ultra Limited)
Height: .372”
Thickness: .071”
Weight: 131 grams
Pressure: 19lbs 11oz
Yellow Stripe (older clutch spring)
Height: .383”
Thickness: .071”
Weight: 135 grams
Pressure: 24lbs 14oz
SE Spring, no color (from eBay)
Height: .385”
Thickness: .079”
Weight: 148 grams
Pressure: 29lbs 7oz
No Stripe (from 2003 Wide Glide)
Height: .398”
Thickness: .071”
Weight: 135 grams
Pressure: 26lbs 9oz
Brown Stripe (from an early easy pull kit)
Height: .401”
Thickness: .063”
Weight: 121 grams
Pressure: 25lbs 1oz
Again, nothing definitive here, just more data to consider for your "guesstimate"...
I just went ahead and reused it. Seems to work great and shifting is nice and smooth. Im still going to upgrade down the road. Put in the extra plate clutch lit and it has no issues so far.
Both charts are great info. Thanks guys
