Default Scary

Blew out a tire today on the highway. Cruising along at 80, started to smell something odd. Turned off cruise control. Felt a little wiggle then a shake in the back end. Got her pulled over to the side of the road and investigated. Rear tire was flat. That’s totally a scary feeling and everything goes from happy to scary in about 5 seconds. Got a tow home and have to wait till Monday to get a new tire put on. But glad it happened close to home and not further down the road.

Can you see any cause for the flat tire? Nail or anything.
Most important no one was injured. Never had a flat tire, knock on wood.

No obvious cause. I’ll know more when the doctor cuts up the patient on Monday. Funny thing is that I checked pressures Friday and they were good.

mine was valve stem core. I checked it and it was fine. Next day went for a ride and immediately noticed something was off. Rear tire was flat. I guess when I checked the pressure it damaged the core. replaced core and all was good. good luck and glad u got her pulled over safe.

I've had 2 rear tire blowouts the last 4 yrs. Both were on Interstates cruise set at 80-82. It gets a little squirrelly but not a big deal as it doesn't take long to shut her down.

One was close to home. With a tire machine in my shop and a spare rear tire, I would be up and running in a couple of hours....

I had a rear tire go flat in the High Occupancy Vehicle ( HOV ) lane. Walls on both sides and no real place to stop. I slowed it down to about 40 and although the rear was very sloppy, I didn't feel that it was unmanageable and kept going. I got it out of the HOV and to a close gas station, aired the tire back up and headed home. It went flat again almost immediately but since I was on side streets, I rode it the two or three more miles home on the flat. It was pretty much a straight line shot with only two or three turns required that I took in first gear. While they were putting a new tire on it ( I trailered it to my indy) he told me that the American Elite tires I was running have a very stiff sidewall and he wasn't surprised I was able to make it as far as I did on a flat.

I am by no means advising anyone to ride on a flat like I did. I simply tell the story to let people know it's possible to keep going to get to a safe place to stop. I ride almost daily and am very comfortable on my bike and know both mine and the bikes limits very well. I realize how stupid it was but I was able to save several hours blocking the HOV lane on hot day and made it home without having to pay for a tow.

I am glad the OP was able to control it and stop safely.
