Hi all , I have a 14 Ultra. I bought it last oct and put about 1000 on it before putting it up . Since getting it out in spring I have about 2500 on it so far this year. I've noticed that when her and I are both on it I seem to be experiencing A surging going up though the gears. Kinda almost like a bucking issue. What would most likely be the cause ? Is that something in the clutch or something other. The bike had 32000 on it when I bought it now almost 36. Compensator ?
any input would be appreciated.
Do you have the maintenance records? It is not clear to me if this is an engine miss or something else. Most things in the power train either work or they are seriously and unmistakably broken. If it has gone 36,000 miles with nothing but oil changes, many service items are due.The usual easy engine items are spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter last season's fuel Check or replace these items and see how it runs. Some fuel injector cleaner properly proportioned for 6 gallons of gas wouldn't hurt either. Techron and Sea Foam seem popular. I use Berryman's Chemtool, everyone has their own preference.
The use of some sort of injector cleaner is a good idea, in the future I would use fuel from a gas station with a "Top Tier" label on the pump. This label indicates the fuel has the required amount of detergents in the gas to keep injectors clean. I used a generic gas at a local station for years and there were some drivability issues. Started using the Top Tier and the issues went away. I learned about Top Tier through this forum.. Maybe something as simple as the gas you use.
Top Tier Gas is easier to find if you know the brands, rather than trying to read stickers on the pumps from the street as you roll by. Go to toptiergas.com and the site explains the top tier certification and which brands comply.
I would also check you plug wires. My 14 SGS had a plug wire that was rubbing on the gas tank and had to put a split hose around it.

My 2016 Ultra Classic was running real well, then all of a sudden it developed an intermittent miss... I pulled the tank to run the wires for my fans, and this is what I found...
That wire had been rubbing on the bottom of the tank...
Hard to tell from the OP's explanation, but it doesn't sound like a plug wire is his problem, but hey, plug wires are easy to check... and this IS a common issue..

so I checked the wires Sure enough my front wire looked exactly like the one you pictured
So I went down to the shop and got a new set and a couple of plugs. changed them out and started it up. Now there is definitely a miss in the engine. Question I have now is could it have jumped time or is there something in the ignition making it miss ? either way it's going to the shop tomorrow in between rain drops

Your original complaint was "surging" or "bucking" when riding two-up. I didn't think a bad wire would cause that. That sounds to be worse than an intermittent "miss" by a bad wire. That actually sounded more to me like a clutch or fuel delivery problem... but it's really hard to take someone's description of a problem and give a diagnosis via the internet....
Now you say the engine has a miss, after changing a bad wire & the plugs.... Does it feel like the same problem you described as "surging"? Or is the miss something new...?
You may need to double check that you got the wires properly plugged in at both ends (plugs and coil). Once in awhile they don't fully snap together well, and it's sometimes hard to tell..
In any case keep us posted on what you (or the shop) discover is the cause...

Good luck with the repair...
so I did find the bad wire as noted new wires , new plugs and the culprit was a bad air intake gasket.
runs like a champ again.. actually even better now with the screamin eagle plug wires
