When I had my 2009 Ultra Classic, I had the pneumatic backrest, which I'm assuming they still make?? Normally, it just stayed in the exact same position, but many times on a long rides I would pull the lever and it would spring forward and give me a lot more support. Or, I would pull that lever and lean it way back. If you're going to go with a backrest, and keep the stock Harley-Davidson seat, I'd go with the adjustable pneumatic version.
However, having to do it again, I would have just sent my seat to Russell Day Long, had them custom make me a seat with a backrest and called it a day. I wasn't familiar with them when I had my Ultra Classic, but now that I have one of their seats on my BMW, I don't think I'll ever own another touring motorcycle without one. They're expensive, and it takes a long time. But well worth it.
