2021 Ultra mine was missing one of the two small screws attaching the lid you see in your picture. Barely opened since new until I noticed the screw missing. Installed it and suddenly I had spring action. A couple of tanks later, not that good anymore. I'll try that fix.

What I’d like to know is why the door doesn’t open the other way. Seems backwards to me and awkward filling it when seated on bike.

You can put your thumb right behind the hinge (full opposite side of button) and push down lightly while pushing the button. Pops up every time.

This very same question has been asked before. The best answer I've heard so far....."if you slide up the tank in a panic stop/crash, and the door pops open, it will rip your nuts off".
