Simple question...don't need smarta$$ replies.

Manual says "approximately 32 oz" and also shows, while bike is LEVEL, fluid onto the spring. Two indicators of proper fluid level. Just trying to get a feel for what other folks are finding to be "approximate".

I was confused about this for a while as well. My info is at home but if I remember correctly, the owners manual says to add 32 oz. when you do a fluids change and the service manual says to fill to the bottom of the clutch diaphram spring. According to Shovelhead Bob, go by the service manual. On a touring bike you'll be a little low if you just add 32 oz. I think what's missing from the owners manual is where they should also state to check the fluid level after you put in the quart, I think they're assuming everyone will do that. You'll hear from many who say it's fine to put in a quart and ride, to each his own I guess.

I thnk where some of the confusing info comes from is the fact that the touring models have a larger capacity primary than the other bikes. You'll have guys who own softtails telling you that 32 oz. is too much which is correct for a S/T or a Dyna. Don't let them confuse you.

For a pre-'07, just dump a quart, aka approximately 32 oz, and go. You will be fine. The amount isn't all that critical. The primary is nothing but an oil bath. As long as there is enough oil in there to get slung around, you are good to go.

The 96" takes a different amount than the "88.
