Default Oil leak by filter

I have a 2011 road king police bike and I noticed oil leak by the filter. Now I am going to change the oil but if it is not coming from there is there something for me to look for. I put a rag under the filter and seems to stop and the rag soaks up the drip. But when does a oil filter leak never had that before. Thanks for the input

Did you try and see if the filter will tighten some more…could have come undone some after miles of vibration/riding.

otherwise change the filter, tighten’er up and check for leaks after few miles.

Change the filter, clean off the mating surface, apply a light coat of oil to the new filter and tighten. If you dont lube the o-ring on the new filter it can catch and buckle and cause a leak.

Also- have you done oil changes on this bike before? This is a known problem area and if you dont catch the oil during a change it will drip down and get everywhere.

This is my first change on this bike. It only has 5,000 miles on it. I bought it from by friend and oil was changed by a dealer

You loc-tited the filter?

I do not think you are supposed to do that…

No , the mounting screw that the filter screws onto.

They make fancy little plastic trays to put under the filter when you change oil so it doesn’t get all over the place. I’ve used thin cardboard (like…maybe a cardboard box from a 12 pack…) under the filter and some brake clean. Obviously, be careful with the brake clean as it eats stuff, period…
At 5K miles…I’m thinking the old oil wasn’t cleaned up very well, but…it wouldn’t hurt to change the filter, check that mounting stud as said for tightness as well as lightly oil the sealing gasket on the new filter.

When you remove an oil filter always check the rubber gasket has come off with it. If you accidentally install the new filter with the old gasket stuck on the mounting surface you probably will get an oil leak.

Had this happen this year on my 07, one day it was fine the next day I noticed a leak, and I'll be damned it was the filter, gave it another twist to the right and it leaked even more, change the oil and filter you should be good, after the change make sure you clean everything real good and keep an eye on it, it happens.

rk classic.
