Even if it was just a temporary situation, like it threw a code that is no longer active. There will be a historic code in the ECM for several engine cycles, before it clears itself..

That historic code will lead you in the direction of what to look at...

Many electrical problems start out as intermittent, before they totally fail..

Is it possible to get codes without a scan tool, like getting blink codes from the dash of some vehicles? Remember that we are talking about a 2006 here.

Yes, you can get codes from the speedo, namely the odometer window.. I have gotten them from my 2001 and my 2003... but years ago I bought an HD code reader, and now have a PowerVision, so I haven't done it the old fashion way in numerous years...

My 2001 and 2003 had had a different method than the 2004 thru 2006 with the TSM/TSSM. Then the HFM came along 2007ish, and luckily you read the codes the same way as the '04-'06.... The bikes with a BCM are the easiest yet...

I found this video... while this guy annoys the hell out of me, he does show how to read codes...
