Do you have a parts manual? They should list the size in the parts manual, then you can cross over to McMaster Carr number. McMaster-Carr is great source for fasteners and a lot of other things. Have used them for a lot. I would think it pretty difficult to make a conversion table of HD parts to M-C part numbers. They list sizes...if you get the HD size, you can find it easily on the M-C website.

I do have the parts manual, but I've never noticed the size of a retaining ring listed in it. I've only seen screws, bolts, washers, nuts listed in the hardware list. I guess I was hoping that someone could tell me the size of the 11150 part. I guess I'll purchase one and measure it myself.
OK..... I knew it gave some sizes...thought it might include sizes for retaining rings. Sorry!! Parts manual is great source for part numbers and sizes if ya look! Which you did..... but.....
Another source is the instructions for various accessories you install. Often there is, in the Harley parts website, an instruction sheet that will show sizes of various fasteners. Good luck!!

I've seen the parts breakdown for many HD parts on their instruction sheets. Screws and such may have part numbers listed that can be looked up for the sizes. I have never seen a list for o-rings, retainging clips,e clips, or other fasteners. I looked for such a size reference for the "FI rebuild kit" for my 2002 FLHTCUI and only found the screw sizes. Nothing for the o-ring sizes.
a stupid retaining ring used on the shifter shaft?
Cripes my local hardware store has bins full of them
Yes, that's it. How would you suggest that I purchase said retaining ring at the local hardware store if I don't know the size? I could take one off the motorcycle, possibly damage it and bring it with me. Then, if the local hardware stores don't carry it, I'm now forced to make an inconvenient trip to the local HD dealer. How would you proceed? Hence, the reason I asked if anyone knows the size.
I'm not sure how I could measure the shaft of the shifter pawl assembly while it's on my motorcycle and I don't have a spare one lying around. The retaining ring is an external one, not an internal one, which you provided a detailed link to.
I did purchase one at a HD dealer this weekend, so I could measure it.
HD Part Number: 11150, shifter shaft external retaining ring
Diameter: 0.352"
Width: 0.029"
