Good morning, this is my 1st post in this section.
An Army buddy has offered me his 04 EG police model. I was with him when he bought it used from Quantico HD over a decade ago and I trust him completely, but coming from an Evo Bad Boy springer, I know jack about TC88s and touring models. My main concern is being too invested financially, as I keep reading horror stories about cam chain issues. Its got about 42k miles and I think he wants about $4k. Its very clean. Local Indy shop near him wants $1200 minimum to address just the tensioners. Thoughts? And thank you for any feedback.
PS: Its has been dechromed since I took that photo.

I think $1200 to swap chain tensioners is outrageous. Well maybe not outrageous, but pretty high. The kit is $500. Can't imagine it takes a competent shop 6 hours in labor to install it.

By "kit" I'm assuming you mean the upgrade to the hydraulic cam plate. If OP chooses to just change the existing (again assuming) cam tensioner shoes, it can be done for around $200 if he does it himself. That includes oil and filter. Then just inspect them every 10k miles or so.

Id opt to go down that road. Have a link to the $200 version and a YouTube video?

I am not sure I agree with this, I do not think we have enough information. Yes the SE cam plate and oil pump is around $500-$550, but what else is included in that price? Adjustable push-rods or are they going through the heads so Rocker box gaskets? New cam and lifters and inner cam bearings? All things that need to considered with the Mileage on the bike

Cam swap or lifters were not in the quote but an oil pump was. I am not opposed to a cam and online study suggests Id benefit from an Andrews TW21. I only called the local shop to get an idea of the cost and in the event I did a fly and ride.
I did adjustable pushrods and an Andrews EV27 in my Evo.

Your looking at a set of cams. Hence the name Twin Cam. A set of cams will run you at a minimum $350. And then you can start adding to that bearings and lifters and gaskets and pushrods etc. Start looking at YouTube videos. Also if you just want to replace shoes look at Cycogaskets.com. If you're going the cams route and the hydraulic cam plate you can easily hit $1000.

I was pretty clear when I called the Indy shop that I was looking at the cheapest option to keep it safe. Cams, and yes I know there are two, were not in the quote. Purpose of the thread was not to bash the shop, but to get an idea of of the purchase price in line and what I may need to get it road worthy. Tires are new.

Looking at the pic and not knowing much else, I'd say it be worth looking into and would be worth the time to address the tensioners. You don't necessarily need new cams, but you're in the range to look at changing the tensioners. That's not a bad price to get into, what looks like from the outside, a bad bike.
I have a local Indy that will install the Fueling Hydraulic plate starting around $700. It all depends on how far you want to take it. And if you're paying someone else to it.
