Default Resetting ECM 2000 model

Troubleshooting my speedometer, I am down to not getting an input signal from the ECM. This pertains too a 2000 Ultra. Alot of good info here for newer models but I can't find anything for this old one. How do I reset this old ECM?
Thanks for any help. Earl

It appears that you have a 2000 Ultra.
You are trying to trouble shoot a speedometer problem.
You report not getting an input signal from ECM? Pulse is from speed sensor so this information is unclear.
What is wrong with speedometer?
Is it the factory original speedometer?
Is speedometer back light functional?
Does LCD odometer display show anything?
Does needle function at all?
Was motorcycle jump started from a running vehicle? *It sometimes can fry borderline electronics.
How is the charging system on bike? Excess voltage can fry speedometer.
Did you clean vehicle speed sensor? Metal build-up will block pulse signal.
Being a 2000 motorcycle means that it should not be a Canbus bike so the speedometer is not married to ECM and mileage is stored in actual speedometer.
Disconnecting all wires to negative battery post should reset bike but it does not read like that is your problem.

Answer those questions and you will get better responses.....

I'm pretty sure the speedo was interfaced with the ECM prior to the canbus system ... However, in 2000 it was certainly a stand alone unit, and could be swapped with any year compatible speedo... plug & play...

Just a wild *** guess, but are your turn signals failing to self-cancel....??

Faulty self-cancelling turn signals and erratic speedo readings are classic symptoms of a bad VSS (vehicle speed sensor), but again, that "guess" is a total guess without more info...

Thanks for the replies Gentlemen. I tried too keep it short too not get too far off in the weeds.
Long story: Last winter I gave my 2000 Ultra alot of love and attention, including a new radio, pulsating tail light and I sent the speedo and tach out too a guy to remove the old bulbs and replace them with new LED's.
The tach works fine but the speedo only lights up. It also does not rack up miles on the odometer.
I cleaned the pick up on the transmission, and eventuly replaced it. Replaced the turn signal module with a badlands unit, then went back when that didn't help. Tried the old taillight setup as well. No dice with anything.
Figured the speedo got itself messed up when sent out for the bulb change. Ordered a pair of Dakota Digital gauges, installed them properly and am getting the same thing.
Looking at the schematics, the speedometer pick up consists of 3 wires going directly into the speedometer itself. It would be stand alone if it wasn't for the forth wire going to the ECM for the speed signal and the fifth wire going to the turn signal module. Pretty sure it's not the turn signal module as I had three in since and none has made a difference. Interesting, when I first installed the pulsating tail light it worked just fine. Then "something" happened and it hasn't pulsated since. I contacted Eagle light, whom I got it from and they recommended resetting the ECM. With newer models it's fairly strait forward, not so with mine.
Where I am now, stock turn signal unit, new Dakota gages, new pickup that apears to be functioning.
Hoping a reset on the ECM will cure these issues.
Thanks again, Earl.

There is no resetting the 2000 ECM - whoever is telling you that doesn't know the system. Have you verified all your fuses are good?

By chance is the wire loom under rear fender scrubbed by rear tire and that wire loom is all chewed up causing shorts and back feeds..
I will guess that all fuses have been removed completely, reviewed and confirmed good and then replaced.

how is charging system. my 2000 started with the speedo not working turn signals acting up and no cruise control. cleaned speed sensor and solved those issues. Then bike started having idle issues. shortly after that the stator quit. New stator Seemed to make everything work better. I would check the output with a multi meter .

Thanks, that's an easy check.
