Default Engine Oil Check

Did anyone see a discrepancy with owners manual with cold vs hot check? States level should show midway on dipstick when cold as well as hot. Am I missing something?

I like to have my oil at the halfway point in the "Safe" zone when cold so when it gets hot and expands, it's not so full that I get oil coming out of my breather into my air filter, or actually blow the dipstick out of my '03 which makes one HELUVA mess. As long as you in the safe zone, cold or hot, you're good........ just don't over fill.

I'll check both sometimes before and after a ride just to see where im at. Ita seems to be a general consensus to run half a qt low to avoid the above mentioned issues.

... doesn’t the highest mark on the dipstick say “Hot full” or “Full hot”?

I believe the dip stick has markings for cold check and hot check. I run mine midway between full and add.

Judging by the amount of posts on the forum about how to check the oil in a motorcycle, it is just short of rocket science.

For a hot motor, the oil could be between the ADD QT and FULL HOT marks. For a cold motor, my manual says oil should not be above the halfway point.

I get that, but when it's hot it is at max level. So when its cold it would show at low end, no? Why when hot you don't want at top level. Can't get higher.
