Default Speed sensor question

Where is the speed sensor located on a 2006 road king ? Also I just had the rocker box gaskets changed and the bike seems to run rough ? And when I picked the bike up my shifter lever was lower Any ideas ?

Why are you replacing the speed sensor....??

Who did the work for you...??

I'm assuming they did the rocker box gasket replacement in-frame... Was there any other work done....??

If the gaskets were done in-frame, with no other work done, there is absolutely no reason to remove the shift lever to change out the rocker box gaskets..... ?!?!

Here's a pic of my recent top end, in-frame rebuild of my 2003 Heritage... as you can see, the shift lever is untouched. .

I haven't done a top end on my bagger yet, but I have had the tank and rockers off, in-frame, without touching the shift lever.....

If someone removed the shifter, while just replacing the rocker box gaskets.... I would be questioning what else they "messed" with...and why....????

That would leave the possibilities for what they touched wide open.... so you can't really use the "check what you last touched" theory while troubleshooting..

If you are going to fix the "rough running" yourself, treat like it just popped up, without taking in consideration the work you think was done...

Start with codes and go from there... fuel, spark, and compression...

Good luck and let us know what you find..

Hattitude to answer your questions, I'm changing the speed sensor because I lost my speedometer and my cancel on the turn signals stopped working. When the shop changed my rocker box gaskets i'm assuming they just took off the seat and tank.
The shift lever had me baffled why it was lower because I knew it had nothing to do with the rocker box gasket change out .

Thanks... all makes perfect sense on the VSS... you obviously know how to trouble shoot/fix that issue... not knowing your experience level, I was hoping your VSS symptoms may hint to a possible rough running cause... no such luck here...

I'd have to inquire at the shop why the shifter was changed, it would drive me crazy wondering what they did..... I would even report it's been running rough since you got it back and see what they offer as a possible solution...

Since it started rough when you got it back from the shop.... They were obviously around the intake during the rocker gasket change...

I would start with checking any connectors and/or hoses around the intake that could have been touched, bumped, or accidentally tugged on while they messed with/around the rockers boxes...

Do you have EFI or carb...?

EFI... make sure they made a solid connection with the fuel line to tank connector... sometimes that doesn't quite click like it should.. give a tug and see if it pulls off... maybe even remove and reconnect it to be sure its a solid connection...

Carb.... make sure they reconnected the fuel petcock vacuum hose to the carb when they put the tank back on...

I'd start there, but running rough can take many turns, twists, and checks to find the issue... My instincts say it's something that was touched/disturbed during their rocker gasket repair, but we may never know what they did during that repair...

Good luck and keep us posted..
