Same for me on my 2020 RGL. The stock heated grips had a bit of play but didn't really notice it. Changed them out to a set of heated Kahuna's (cause I had them on my previous bike and really liked them) and there was a lot more play like yours which made it quite noticeable.

Had the same question when I bought my first HD back in 2008. The Tech, who I trust 100%, said it was normal. Got used to it, but the RKC I bought in 2011 had it much worse and much more noticeable. Bought a package of rubber sink washers from Ace Hardware, slipped them on over the grip…problem solved. Movement is very, very little and the washer does not adversely impact throttle grip movement either way. Done it on every HD I’ve bought since…

I had a few folks message me about the O-rings I used to take up most of the throttle grip slack…don’t know if Ace Hardware is a National chain, but maybe the two sets of identifying numbers might help you find a comparable item if you want to give it a try.

Hey, that's a good idea.. As I mentioned, I only noticed the play when walking the bike around the garage... I'm not really aware of it when I'm riding.. But... I have a pack of of various sized O rings. Will see if one fits...

Next the key is to work the whole assembly inward away from the end of the bar. This will allow the bar end to seat deeper into the grip and take up that play. Be careful not to seat it too deeply or it may prevent the throttle from returning to the off position when released. I like to end up with about 1/16" of play and no binding whatsoever. When you think you have it in a good position, snug everything up a little and try the throttle to make sure it returns. If good, snug everything up to spec. If it binds or has too much play, loosen slightly and try again.
No need to live with it, and probably no need to buy anything unless it's excessively loose. Above procedure is what I did with mine and it takes about 5 minutes. If you loosen just enough that you're able to work it back and forth you should be able to adjust to where it has just enough play that there's no drag on throttle operation and tighten it down.

Question Throttle Grip Play

The "play" in the throttle grip never bothered me much until last Saturday on a group ride and I had my cruise control set for quite a while. When I tried to roll off the throttle to disengage, it just spun forward and missed the cruise control cutoff. Once that happened, the throttle return stopped working as it was binding up inside like it slid past the gear on the switch. After playing with it for a few miles, it popped back in and functioned normally. If I pull the grip out and roll forward, it will slide past the gear every time now and it's super annoying. I'm hoping it's just a slight adjustment needed to remove some of that free play in and out.

Anyone else had that free play affect their throttle roll off?

I did the same when I installed lighted switch buttons, but its not possible to eliminate the end play entirely, so really you dont have to be careful about it, you have to push it inward as far as it will go.
