IMHO, it's a decent bike for the money. But if he does that deal they should be giving him money for his bike.

Sorry, I missed that you posted your friend's bike. His 2011 Super Glide is worth $8200 average retail....

Year: 2011
Make: Harley-Davidson
Model: FXDC Dyna Super Glide Custom
Model Type: Cruiser
Displacement: 1584
Cylinders: 2 VIN: 1HD1GV41B
Finance Advance: $7,610
MSRP: $12,999
Avg Retail: $8,205
Auction Wholesale $6,980
Clean Trade: $6,780
Fair Trade: $6,120

So condition/maintenance being equal, the Indy would need to give your friend $1K, plus the Electra Glide, for it to be a fair trade for his 2011 Super Glide..... And that would be IF the Electra Glide had the spring cam tensioners upgraded...

If the Electra Glide needs to have the cam tensioners upgraded, IMHO the Indy would need to give your friend the Electra Glide AND $2500 for it to be an equitable trade.... The Indy IS NOT offering a good deal...

Also, I would not negotiate with the Indy to provide the spring cam tensioner upgrade as part of the deal. The fact that the Indy is already trying to take advantage of your friend, suggests he'd cut corners to save as much money as he could while doing the cam tensioner upgrade as part of the "deal"...

Buying a used bike is a crap shoot. I bought a 2003 Ultra in 2011 with 2000 miles and it was a great deal. I bought a 2012 FLHTK with 12k last year and it’s been a money pit and it’s in the shop right now. I’m pretty sure when I sell my 2012 and it has 34,000 miles, it’ll be solid and a much better deal than it was last year. It all depends on the maintenance and upkeep and who worked on it.

It’s surprising how often the dealers don’t know if the twin cams had the cam chain tensioner’s upgraded or at least claim they don’t know.

Your friend shouldn’t have any trouble selling his bike for a couple of thousand more than a dealer is willing to pay for it.

Lots of good information guys! Thanks. You all agree with what I've been trying to tell him already! But you've given me some more ammunition to try to change his mind. I'll let him read your posts hopefully he'll come to his senses.

Most individuals selling motorcycles are not super interested in giving you the best deal.

They're super interested in making money.

It's on the buyer to do his research beforehand.

2006 was last of the TC88 not the last of the TC. 2007 it became the TC96.
The bike is a 5 speed. Read the write up seller did. Reads like a con man flipper. It is not worth what they want.
Keep the 2011

Ahhh, he needs to sell his bike for a couple grand more than that trade deal, and find a better bagger. He has some value he can bank on with that FXDC.

Tell him to hold out.

Bike has a lot of extras. It's at an "indy" shop. What do ya'll think? I know he could do better from a private owner, but he's been trying to sell his bike for awhile and has no offers at all, and he needs to sell or trade in his bike because of the money. He'd like some advice before pulling the trigger on it. He's mostly concerned about the miles. Is that a lot? The bike seems like it's been taken very good care of.

That is WAY too much money for a 2006 anything! Plus it is advertised as an Electra Glide "Classic" but it looks more like a Standard to me, for some reason. Maybe there is a way to look at the VIN and get all those letters and digits explained. This whole thing just looks "fishy" to me.

I bought my current bike at FOX and am very happy with them. They have been in business for many years and they do stand behind their bikes. The service department does outstanding work. You won't go wrong dealing with them. As for the deal, does it make you happy for the bike you want? Remember when you buy from an individual, you buy 'as is' and they could be selling because they are tired of all the problems! I'll bet if you ask they would even do the cam tensioners as part of the deal.
