Picked up my first Harley on Saturday. 2001 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. Rode it about 80 miles Saturday, another 30 or so on Sunday. Today I took it out and the speedometer was intermittent. Sometimes it works. Other times it either sits at "0" or jumps around. This also effects the radio AGC, which I assume works by looking at the speed of the bike to increase the volume. Didn't notice any other issues mechanically or electrically. Like I said, 1st Harley. So any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks

I be way off here but I believe these models had a lot of problems with the speedometer sending units. Some had luck with removing them from the transmission, and cleaning off the sensor, where others had to replace the sensor all together. Hope this helps.
I worked on a 2000 flhtcui with the same symptoms. A wire from the sending unit was pinched and eventually broke. The problem area is on the right side of the frame near the neck. I think there is a coated metal strap holding the bundle of wires near or at the break. It's a lot of fun to fix!

Thanks to those that replied. Thanks to this forum and a little more research, I cleaned the sensor and sprayed out some connections. Seems to be working the last couple rides. If it pops back up I'll be back to pick everyone's brains. Again, thanks.

Hope it stays fixed. The speedometer needle like Harley's tac is motor driven. On an 04, if it's speedometer is not getting a transmission signal, it will throw a code .
My 04 tac does that in the winter. It will bounce and be erratic. Get to 2000 and hang there and then jump a 1000 rpm.
I've checked connection, ground etc.. I think it's just the tac getting old.
