Default New-old touring bikes

I’m looking to add a touring platform bike to the stable. Since I bought my Dyna, I’ve learned that I really enjoy long-distance travel. I’m at about 11k miles since January on the Dyna and actually find it pretty comfortable on trips.

I’m mostly upgrading for the 6-speed, cruise, and better brakes. Of course the wind protection and more storage will be nice, but neither of those bother me much on the Dyna. Oh yeah - I’m over the Dyna wobble, but of course I would put money into improving that if I wasn’t looking at new bikes.

My budget pretty much has me looking at 2010-2013 bikes - price seems to go up with the Rushmore upgrades…. For the record, I don’t care much about the infotainment type of upgrades but I’d take the performance and better braking.

1) Is the early ABS worth it? It seems like I’ve read of a lot of issues, but I like the idea of having ABS.

2) lots of higher mileage bikes in this age range - I don’t mind that too much as I put on a lot of miles and will just depreciate whatever I get anyways. What should I look out for regarding cam tensioners and other internals?

Thanks for any advice! I rode a 2019 road glide that basically ruined me. Would have taken it home but not sure I could afford the bike and the divorce it might cause

I can assure you the bike would be much cheaper than the divorce that ot would have caused... Even at HD prices. In the year range that you're looking tensioners shouldn't be a concern. Take your time and find a clean bike with documented maintenance. A welcomed bike is both ridden and maintained, so expect some miles, but don't be turned off by them. I'd take a well maintained bike with higher miles over a neglected low mile bike.

The bump to a 2014 is WELL worth the extra.

'09 should be on your list too, but agree that if possible should go with a 2014+ sharknose as they went to the 49mm front forks and the sharks ride better than the batwings.

Good info, thanks! I test rode a 2019 road glide and it is an awesome bike. When I sat down to be real about my finances I decided I’d be more comfortable paying about half that much but I am totally ruined!

Luckily, everything’s a Cadillac coming off a Dyna, so the 2010-ish bikes I’m looking at should still have 80% of the improvement. Just trying to stay ‘09 +

I really like being on the road and the payments on a newer bike would pay for lots of gas, hotels, and camp spots…

I've had the 09 (new generation frame) - I'd say this is mandatory earliest year I'd consider, especially coming off a dyna, so you will really appreciate a bike that can corner hard.

I've also got a 14 - In my opinion, it's overrated. I might even prefer the 09? Not sure why - yes the forks are bigger, frame is the same, but when they are next to each other and I want to carve corners, I like the 09-13.

That's a pretty good buy I'd say, should have a lot of life left in it and she has some nice upgrades.
That 103 is a nice motor,a lot of bike for under $10K.
