I use booking.com. They present refundable and non-refundable rates. Easy to deal with, easy to search, no issues.
My rooms were booked with the refundable rates. But they require 24 hours notice. Technically, so do the hotel apps, but they excuse you if you have a valid reason, and Expedia doesn’t.
With the hotel customer service you speak directly to an American with discretionary authority. With Expedia you speak to a flunky, with a foreign accent, who is hard to understand and following a screw you script. It’s your money, your choice.
We booked a package with JetBlue because we had credits due to expire (different story). They booked the “hotel” that was really a motel near the highway. Bums and homeless hanging around, wife felt unsafe. Trying to get a new hotel for the rest of the stay was a nightmare. The airlines pays these places upfront. They get them based on location and lowest price to them, most of the time sight unseen.

it really depends on the hotel. a lot of hotels will allow you to cancel up to 4pm on the day of your reservation. always read the cancellation policy before you book the room.

When I was planning my trip, my wife made most of my reservations with Expedia. I made one with the Wyndham app. The day my bike broke down, I called the Wyndham app reservation, told them my situation, and they let me cancel.
Today when the dealer called and said my parts were in, and they could fix it, I had to cancel my motel. Expedia told me they had to charge me, because the motel would charge them. But I called the motel and they said they wouldn’t charge me. So Expedia let me cancel. So I was able to cancel both Wyndham reservations, but the one took me 30 seconds, the Expedia one took me 30 minutes. And talking to an overseas customer service person who was hard to understand.
Tonight I made the reservation with the IHG app (Holiday Inn), it was easy. I’m not sure how lenient their cancellation policy is.
